Cannabutter, or weed butter, is one of the best ways to consume cannabis. While it might be a little time consuming to make medicated butter, it’s not at all difficult, and the benefits are enormous!
With medicated butter, you can eat your medicine in just about any way you choose. If you’re in a rush you could just spread your butter on a piece of toast and go. If you have a little more time, you can make cookies, or just about any recipe that calls for butter. The beauty of infusing cannabis into butter or oil directly is that you can turn literally any recipes into an edible - whether you want to cook your eggs into it or turn it into a five-star chocolate cupcake, you’ve got a world of options at your disposal!
This recipe works just as well for oil, so if you’re dairy-free, don’t sweat it. Any olive, coconut, or avocado oil will do! Cannabis infused oil can be enjoyed in any dish you want to add oil to, or even used as a tincture.
It’s important you don’t skip the decarboxylation (or “decarbing”) step. Without this process, the THC in the cannabis remains in THCA form, and you’ll be missing out on the health and mental effects of the THC. It also helps the cannabinoids to bind to the molecules in your oil or butter for a smoother, more infused end product. Don’t be alarmed if your cannabis changes colour to a darker, brownish-green - that’s a sign that it’s decarbing and converting THCA to THC (Or CBDA to CBD!).
Don’t forget to keep your medicated butter or medicated oil stored separately from regular butter or oil, and as always keep out of reach of children at all times. Now you have the freedom to consume your medicated butter in any form you want!
Enjoy!
Ingredients:
3.5c of butter or (olive, coconut or avocado oil)
1oz (28.3g) slightly ground cannabis, decarboxylated (strain with 10% thc)
(*This should result in approx. 2800mg THC in the entire infusion)
Directions:
Step 1):
This is an essential (and often missed) first step, decarboxylating the cannabis:
When we decarb cannabis, the heat converts THCA into THC, the molecule that delivers uplifting and ‘high’ effects. When preparing CBD edibles, this same process should be applied.
Another option to decarb your medicine involves steeping the cannabis in a pouch that can be boiled, and submerged in 212 degree water for 90 minutes.
Grind up bud slightly.
Preheat your oven to 245 degrees Fahrenheit. Place cannabis buds on a non-stick, oven-safe tray wrapped up in tin foil. Place tray in the oven and bake slowly for 30-40 minutes.
Tip: low-and-slow is the recommended approach when decarbing to better preserve the cannabinoids.
Every 10mins or so, shake the tin foil package around. Once done in oven, grind the decarboxylated cannabis coarsely with a hand grinder.
Step 2):
Set your slow cooker to low, or somewhere around 160 degrees Fahrenheit (or place on stove in pan at very low temp).
Tip: Avoid exceeding 200 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent burning or wasting cannabinoids. You can also add a little water to help prevent scorching.
Add the butter or oil and ground cannabis. Stir occasionally. Do NOT let boil!
After about 3 hours, turn off the crockpot or stovetop and wait for the butter or oil to cool.
Strain. Set a funnel on top of a jar and line it with cheesecloth. Once the liquid has cooled, pour it over the cheesecloth funnel and allow it to strain freely. Tip: Do not squeeze the cheesecloth too much as it can add more of the ‘green’-tasting plant material into the final oil or butter.
Refrigerate the jar. If excess water forms at the bottom of the jar, you can remove the solid butter or oil with a knife and drain the water out. (The butter or oil will need to refrigerate for about an hour before removing the water.)
Dose carefully! You can use cannabis oil in place of any regular oil in any recipe. Make sure to note the % of THC in the strain you choose to use. This is how you will calculate the potency of your finished cannabutter or canna-oil. Finding a THC Dosage calculator online can help you but typical strains are 10-25% THC, some strains can have more. **Tip: Using this method above, 1 tsp of medicated oil should contain approx. 16.7mg per tsp based on having a 10% thc in the strain.
Allow to cool and strain. Store in the fridge for up to 2 months.
